I’ve often found myself picking up a few bundles and turning them into arrangements that look like they cost much more than they did. It’s a fun and rewarding way to add a personal touch to your home decor or to create a thoughtful gift.

For this arrangement, aim to pick a mix that includes large, eye-catching blooms, smaller filler flowers, and some greenery to add texture and depth. Here’s what I typically look for:

Focal Flowers: These are the stars of your arrangement. Think roses, hydrangeas, or peonies. They draw the most attention and set the tone for the bouquet.

Filler Flowers: These complement the focal flowers and fill in the gaps. Good options include baby’s breath, alstroemeria, or spray roses.

Greenery: Adding greenery helps to create a full, lush look. Eucalyptus and ruscus are both great choices.

Preparing Your Vase

Before you start arranging, prepare your vase. I like to use a simple glass jar or a classic vase, depending on the look I’m going for. Clean it thoroughly to ensure there’s no residue that could harm the flowers. Then, fill it about a quarter of the way with water and add a packet of flower food if you have one. This helps to keep your flowers fresh for longer.

To help keep the flowers in place, create a grid on the top of the vase using thin tape. This simple trick will make it much easier to position your flowers exactly where you want them.

Making the Flower Arrangement

Start with your focal flowers. For this example, let’s use white hydrangeas. Trim the stems at an angle to help them absorb water better, and remove any leaves that would be below the water line to prevent bacteria growth. Place the hydrangeas in the vase, evenly spaced, to create a balanced base.

Next, add your filler flowers. I’m a big fan of using dahlias for their vibrant colors and interesting shapes. Again, trim the stems and remove excess leaves. Place them around the hydrangeas, making sure to leave some space for the other flowers.

Now it’s time for the roses. I prefer white roses for a fresh, bright look, but you can choose any color that suits your arrangement. To make the roses look fuller, press the stem between your palms and gently spin them to loosen the petals. Carefully peel back the outer petals to open them up a bit more. Alternate these fuller roses with some left as they are for variety. Add a few pink roses to introduce a pop of color and fill in any gaps.

Adding Greenery and Finishing Touches

Once your main flowers are in place, it’s time to add the greenery. Greenery not only fills out the arrangement but also adds texture and a natural feel. Eucalyptus is a great choice because of its pleasant scent and attractive look. Place the stems around the edges and between the flowers, adjusting as needed to get a balanced appearance.

To give the arrangement some dimension, save the longer, thinner flowers for the end. Lavender stalks are perfect for this. Their height and shape add visual interest and help to draw the eye upward.
