The paper crane, or “orizuru,” is a timeless symbol of peace, hope, and good fortune in Japanese culture. Folding a paper crane is not only a calming, meaningful craft but also a wonderful introduction to the art of origami. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the steps to create your own paper crane and explore various creative ways to decorate with these delicate creations!

How to Make a Paper Crane

Materials Needed:

  • Square piece of paper (preferably origami paper, but any square paper will work)
  • A flat surface to work on

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Fold Diagonally:origami paper crane
    • Place the square paper on your flat surface. Fold it in half diagonally to form a triangle. Crease the fold well and then unfold it. Then do the other side. Fold the paper in half and unfold. Do the other side as well.
  2. Create a Square Base:origami paper crane
    • With the paper unfolded, you’ll see intersecting crease lines forming an “X.” Fold each corner of the square toward the center where the creases intersect. This is called the “square base.” Be careful at this step that each side is perfectly square.
  3. Fold the Sides:
    • With the square base facing up, fold the top layer of the lower edges toward the center crease line. This forms a kite shape. Flip the paper over and repeat this fold on the other side.
  4. Form the Crane’s Body:
    • Fold the top point of the kite down. Fold the sides again along the middle to make an even smaller kite. This is the crane’s body.
  5. Create the Wings:
    • Fold the two bottom flaps into the body like so. Pull the top flaps outward to form the crane’s wings. Make sure to crease well. Then, fold the top layer of the sides down to create the crane’s head and tail.
  6. Shape the Crane:
    • Gently pull the wings apart to inflate the body. Adjust the head and tail to your liking. Your paper crane is now complete!
